About the Sound and Character

The sound of the taiko is a physical force. It features colossal bass pressure, deep resonance, and a striking impact felt throughout the entire body. A single strike can shake the air and fill space completely.

Structure and Features

A taiko body is typically carved from a single piece of solid wood (often Japanese zelkova), with thick cowhide stretched tightly and secured by massive iron tacks. Performers strike the drum using heavy wooden sticks called bachi, engaging their entire bodies.

Genres

  • Traditional Shinto and Buddhist festivals (matsuri)
  • Contemporary taiko ensemble performances (Kumi-daiko)
  • Cinematic soundtracks, epic, and world music
