Bowed bass instrument
The sound of the double bass is deep, massive, thick, and enveloping. It provides the foundational “bass” supporting the entire orchestral or jazz texture. In jazz, it is frequently played pizzicato (plucked), driving a swinging groove.
A massive wooden body approximately 2 meters tall. It is strung with 4 thick strings (tuned in fourths: E, A, D, G). The musician plays standing or sitting on a high stool, using a heavy bow or fingers.
