Plucked string instrument
The sound of the ukulele is cheerful, high-pitched, carefree, and very bright. Due to the short neck and nylon strings, the sound decays quickly, making it ideal for rhythmic beach song accompaniment.
It is a miniature four-string guitar. The classical (soprano) size is very compact. An interesting tuning feature: the 4th (top) string is not tuned lower than the rest (like a guitar), but high, in the same octave as the 2nd string (high G), which produces that light, “jumping” sound.
