About sho

Sound and Character

Sound and Character

The shō sounds like a pure, mystical, motionless vertical chord hovering in space. It creates a dense vertical harmony, like a frozen sound cloud.

Design and Features

It consists of 17 thin bamboo tubes arranged in a circle within a cup-shaped body. Tiny metal reeds are installed at the bases of the tubes. The musician extracts sound both when inhaling and exhaling.

Genres Used In

  • Japanese classical court music (gagaku)
  • Buddhist temple music
  • Contemporary minimalism (e.g., works by John Cage)
