About the Sound and Character

The sound of the shakuhachi is unique for its “earthy” texture: it blends a pure tone with the deep rustle of wind, air friction, and subtle microtonal bends. It can convey absolute emptiness (ku), silence, and the power of elements with a single breath.

Structure and Features

The flute is carved from the lower root-end of the madake bamboo stalk, including the thick rhizome. It has only 5 finger holes (4 on the front, 1 on the back). Sound is produced by blowing across an outward-slanted mouthpiece edge, requiring precise control over head angle and breath.

Genres

  • Zen Buddhist meditative music (honkyoku)
  • Traditional sankyoku ensemble (with koto and shamisen)
  • Modern minimalism, ambient, and cinematic aesthetics
