About the Sound and Character

The sound of the qanun is bright, sparkling, and crystal clear, resembling a harp or harpsichord but with a distinct Eastern flavor. The musician can instantly change string pitch by microtones while playing, creating shimmering, flowing glissandos.

Structure and Features

It features a trapezoidal flat wooden body, with part of the soundboard covered in fish or calf skin. About 78 strings are strung on the qanun (grouped in triples for each note). A unique feature is the system of small metal levers (mandals) that allow the tuning to be changed mid-performance. The performer plays using metal plectrums worn on the fingers.
