Melody wind instrument with drone

About hulusi

Sound and Character

Sound and Character

The sound of the hulusi is gentle, nasal, warm, and enveloping, reminiscent of the sound of a clarinet or a soft bagpipe. Thanks to its side tubes, the instrument produces a constant harmonic accompaniment (drone) while playing.

Design and Features

The main resonator is made from a natural dried bottle gourd. Three bamboo tubes are inserted into it: a central one (with playing holes for the melody) and two side ones (responsible for the constant bass background). Inside each tube is a hidden metal reed.
