About the Sound and Character

The sound of the dhol is rolling, thick, thunderous, and incredibly energetic. Due to the differential tension of the membranes, one side delivers a deep, dense bass, while the other provides a high snapping accent, allowing a single instrument to act as a full rhythm section.

Structure and Features

The body of the dhol is carved from a solid block of mango or shisham wood into a barrel shape. The membranes are made from animal skin (often goat or buffalo) and tensioned using a system of ropes or straps with steel rings for tuning.
