About the Sound and Character

The darbuka produces a very wide spectrum of sounds: from a deep, resonating bass (dum) in the center to a sharp, high, piercing snap (tek) at the rim. Virtuoso performers play complex polyrhythmic lace patterns on it at lightning speeds.

Structure and Features

The drum has a goblet shape. Classic darbukas are made of clay with a fish skin head, while modern ones are crafted from aluminum or copper with a synthetic plastic head, making the sound sharper and independent of humidity. It is played with the fingers of both hands.
