About the Sound and Character

The cajón is an acoustic drum kit in a single box. Striking the center of the front panel produces a thick, barrel-like bass (kick), while strikes on the top corners yield a dry, snapping sound that substitutes for a snare drum.

Structure and Features

It is a rectangular plywood box with a round sound hole on the back. The front panel (tapa) is made of thinner plywood. Inside, pressed tightly against the tapa, are guitar strings or special snares that create a characteristic sandy rattle upon impact. The musician sits directly astride the instrument.
